It’s probably no surprise then that Blizzard is working on Overwatch 2, but we haven’t heard much since the sequel was first unveiled in 2019. What’s on the way?
When will Overwatch 2 be released?
Blizzard is remaining remarkably tight-lipped regarding the release date for Overwatch 2, and the only news we have is pretty bad: confirmation from an earnings call that the game won’t launch in 2021. That means we’re waiting for 2022 at the earliest. However, fans will at least get a ‘sneak peek’ of the game at Blizzcon 2021, which takes place on 19 February. After the opening ceremony, there’s a ‘Behind the Scenes of Overwatch 2’ session on the schedule which will start at 11:10pm UK time. This will give fans a 40-minute “sneak peek behind the scenes of Overwatch 2. What platforms will Overwatch 2 be on?
When Overwatch 2 was first unveiled, it was announced for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch – though now it looks more likely that it will hit the newer PS5 and Xbox Series X as well as, or perhaps instead of, the PS4 and Xbox One. It’s also worth noting that the Switch version of the original game was not available until 15 October 2019, so there’s a chance that the Switch take on Overwatch 2 might also have a later launch.

What can we expect from Overwatch 2?
There’s still plenty we don’t know about the game. It’s set to move on from the 6v6 team combat where it made its name, to entirely PvE (player versus enemy) missions for Overwatch 2. This will work in tandem with the shift to Avengers-style customisation options. The game will still reward loyal players of the Overwatch 1, with all the new online multiplayer updates coming to both games, These include a new Push mode, where teams fight to control a robot in a tug-of-war style epic. Accomplishments and loot accrued will also be carried over to the new game, so you won’t lose everything you’ve worked so hard for. Look out for some new maps too, with Monte Carlo, Gothenburg, Toronto and Rio de Janeiro all reimagined in stunning detail as Blizzard takes you on a global tour.
